What is Tae Kwon Do?
Tae Kwon Do (literally ‘the art of kicking and punching’) is basically a combination of the abrupt linear motions of Japanese Karate and the more flowing circular movements of the Chinese martial arts.
What is E.W. Tae Kwon Do?
E.W. Tae Kwon Do was founded in the UK by Mr E. Williams (7th Dan), the chief instructor and a former British, European and Eastern Champion who has trained and been graded in Korea.
In style E.W. Tae Kwon Do is similar to Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan which was founded by Grand Master Hwang Kee. The unique personality and character of E.W. Tae Kwon Do is manifest in the students by their skill and abilities, especially in kicking techniques.
E.W. Tae Kwon Do currently has 25 black belt instructors that are still training with Master Williams and has to date enrolled over 2000 students.
What is the philosophy?
Traditionally Tae Kwon Do aims to instil within its students the personal qualities of courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self control and indomitable spirit. E.W. Tae Kwon Do students are taught in an atmosphere which promotes the development of these qualities alongside good technique and expertise in all areas of the art; self-defence, sparring, fitness, stamina, flexibility and the performance of Hyung (traditional patterns of fighting techniques).
What does it offer?
Training is not only on physical development, but the mental aspects are also emphasised. Viewed on the surface, it is the utility of bare hands and feet as effective weapons of self-defence, the accent being on self-defence, with oppression and aggression totally rejected. Today, the concept that the Martial Arts are confined to those involved in aggressive and malevolent situations is common place. On the contrary! It has been my experience to find some of the nicest people one could hope to meet in the gym; those who come with malicious notion soon find the discipline and strict training too demanding and are weeded out. Our classes are taught to a high standard and we welcome all ages, abilities, cultures and other Martial Arts students from other styles to train with us in our friendly and sociable Dojangs.
How is E.W. Tae Kwon Do different?
Ours is a total discipline, which places equal importance on hand and foot techniques to provide a balance form of self-defence and overall fitness. It encompasses physical as well as mental control, properly formulated exercises and callisthenics, good conduct, discipline and respect. Self confidence and a sense of proper values and responsibility are some of the important attributes a student acquires alongside the skills of the martial art.
